This is the debut EP from this Arizona band, dropping a brief set of songs showcasing some heavy yet melodic old school styled hardcore with unique high-pitched vocal shouts that sort of bring Shutdown or something like that to mind. Most of the songs are less than two minutes and even though they're not really pushing the envelope, they are energetic, and I like the contrast of the high-pitched vocals against the music... usually this type of stuff would have gruffer, deeper vocals (i.e. more typical/generic shouts). The songwriting tends to be straightforward, but "Ears Still Ringing" is the true winner. It's longer and a bit more intricate, with some nice dual guitar interaction and slower melodic chords at the start, and then things get somewhat dissonant for an awesome metallic mid-90's sounding arpeggio. I would totally love to hear them head more in that direction and mix it up with the straight hardcore influences. The recording isn't that bad, but the vocals are mixed a bit too loud (especially the gang backups), and they need more bass in there. I think those issues are holding them back slightly. It's also sort of bothersome the way the vocals are often doubled. But the guitars are totally perfect, clear with just the right level of distortion, and the drums work out fine. Visually this one keeps things simple but effective, with an icon of an eagle, only a few colors, consistent fonts, and scratchy background textures... with a few subtle live band shots mixed in as well. The lyrical content is sort of typical for hardcore, dealing with personal issues, friends, the scene, and that sort of thing, but I do think things are handled somewhat more creatively here. "Point that criticism inward, Then maybe you could see how much there is to learn and how much we have in common, There you go again running your mouth, Hiding that knife in your smile, When are you gonna learn that nobody cares what you have to say when all you do is insult... belittle... degrade..." This is competent stuff. A mildly stronger mix would have made a difference, but I'll be curious to hear future efforts from this group. I've heard far worse.
