Song of the Day: UVB-76, “...a floating globe of brittle bone,” from .corpse's hands melted onto table surface... (Self-Released, 2016)

.corpse's hands melted onto table surface, windows shattered by radio static is the debut EP from UVB-76, the experimental noise project of Laurence Taylor (COF Records, Caïna, etc.). It's a fairly simple yet very effective concoction of manipulated radio signals, analog synth, and vocals that can lend a power electronics-tinged death industrial vibe to the work; but not generically so.

The compositions tend to work with space and nuance, allotting enough breathing room for each element to play a role—this piece in particular (full title: ".plastic chairs in the shape of sexual organs | a floating globe of brittle bone") offering the widest range of tactics, from thicker and grittier distortion with sneering vocals to unexpected breaks of mournful melodies. I also appreciate the atypical (and atypically formatted) titles, which offer something else to latch onto and consider when taking in the sounds.

I'm consistently surprised by the amount of interesting, high-quality noise being created around the globe these days, and UVB-76 will be yet another promising outfit to attempt to keep up with...
