Review: Torture Killer “For Maggots to Devour” CD

First things first: Stupid band name, generic album title, horrible, childish, generic cover art. Aside from the photos and illustrations (which all sort of suck), the layout looks kind of cool, set up like an autopsy form or something, but holy shit is that cover a monstrosity... I just can't understand what makes people (bands/labels) look at things like this and go, "Yeah! That's the one! Slap that right on the cover!" But anyway, this Finnish band combines a tone similar to the Sunlight sound with moderately paced death metal more reminiscent of classic Florida bands like Obituary, as well as some groovier upper-east coast styled rhythms and breakdowns, all the while fronted by straightforward guttural growls with a few higher cackles. It's not bad. It's nothing new or exciting to me, but I can listen to it and enjoy it for what it is. The songs are straightforward and simple without running on for too long, and the band just sticks to what they do without much variation. I wouldn't mind hearing fewer groovy riffs or a bit more tempo variation, but the songwriting is decent. A tad boring, but decent. The recording's not bad. I like the mix a lot, it's really thick and dense with enough clarity to work and a good, warm set of tones. The bass is hard to make out sometimes, but the vocals are expertly mixed against the guitars and the drums sound a lot better than most bands of this nature in this day and age. Sometimes the guitar tone feels too clinical and unnatural for me, but overall it's alright. I can't imagine anyone needs a hint at what the lyrics to songs called "Fuck Them When They Bleed" or "Gore Terror" are about, right? This is better than I thought it would be. I'll admit, I fully expected it to be total crap. It's not a great record, but I have no real problems with it aside from the fact that it gets old after about 20 minutes. Could be worse...
