Review: Running Like Thieves “Same Time Next Year” CD

Here's some creative hardcore from ex-members of Bold and Supertouch. I was so psyched to get this disc in the mail. Having taken their band name from my favorite Bold song, as soon as I discovered who was involved in the band I knew I had to hear this. Of course Matt Warnke's unique vocals are the key element that makes this band sound a bit different, but the music covers some ground as well. The title track is sort of straightforward hardcore musically, but the singing is really memorable and truly makes the song. Meanwhile, "Here's a Story" is a little bit heavier and slower with a rhythmic edge, and "Outside Looking In" is far more melodic with a lot of interesting riffing that strays from typical power chords and whatnot. The production is raw and takes some getting used to, but after a few minutes it's easy to adjust to. I'm not even sure what I would change about it. It's really not bad, it's just different. I think I expected it to sound a little bit cleaner. It actually sounds like it was recorded many years ago. But the bass is there, the drums are natural, and despite a little bit of excess treble the guitars sound okay. I guess I'd just like to hear them with a little bit of a smoother sound, but it's no big deal. I like the layout a lot. I don't know, something about it's just cool. Inside everything is black and white with some standard live photos and lyrics, but the outer artwork is really interesting, and the color band photos aren't the norm, and that's what really catches my eye. The lyrics are brief passages that generally deal with frustration and other personal issues. They're simple enough, but I like 'em. "Maelstrom reigns, Instead of bliss, Try to think of some alternative, Do you take that long goodbye, Or continue to hate your life, I can't see what's in front of me." If you're expecting this to sound like the members' past bands... don't. But it is good, and subtle similarities do exist. I wish this was a full-length, because I can't wait to hear more.
