Here's a brief two-song EP from this Virginia experimental electronics artist, and I must say that this is pretty interesting material. It's somewhat musical in that there are noticeable melodies and rhythms, and a certain ethereal sensibility runs throughout each composition, but it's also pretty damn original, at least to my ears, because I've never really heard anything like this. I don't know how the hell I'd describe it. There are some pulsing low tones that are a bit more rhythmic, some melodic synth patterns and hums, some jittery and slightly noisy textures that have a bright metallic ring to them (appropriately enough), etc. "Nedge" is somewhat more laidback and quaint with its use of repetitive melody and almost hypnotic minimal soundscapes, while "In Silhouettes" is a bit more rhythmic so "beats" play a larger role, but not in a traditional sense... it's not like dance music or anything like that, and a lot of the rhythms aren't straightforward... it's really strange. But that same spacey sort of depth is there. There's definitely a cool ambient vibe going on here - it's sort of got a weird futuristic sort of atmosphere to it... almost like a more mature and intriguing (i.e. not cheesy or upbeat) take on some of what was going on with a lot of synth-based pop acts in the 80's. I'm not sure what means were used to record these two tracks, but they both sound excellent. Everything is smooth and clear, and definitely seems very professional. The packaging here is done in overlapping sleeves that are fairly minimal but still interesting and effective. The CD-R is in a heavy white sleeve that has the project's name and contact address on it, and then a slightly smaller white vellum sleeve is laid overtop which has the track titles and some artwork printed on it (all in black ink). Not bad at all. I'm pretty impressed by this actually. I'm sort of surprised that this project hasn't been picked up by a label, because I've heard worse material from some pretty notable record labels in my day. I wish this was longer, I'd definitely like to hear more...
