Five tracks, 25 minutes. Totally raw and over the top "screamo" type stuff from Canada. In some ways. It's a bit darker than most of that stuff, though. And heavier at times. But the vocals are certainly along those lines, and the music is definitely abrasive. The oppressively thick and muddy sound, likely due to lo-fi recording techniques, keeps some of the caustic textures in check I assume. The bass playing is fucking awesome as shit, and I also love the distorted bass tone. But hot damn, the bass is mixed almost louder than the guitars, and the bass playing is tight as fuck and runs all over the place without missing a beat. Incredible. Usually this kind of stuff gets on my nerves, especially the vocals, but I can deal with this. I think I would like to hear this band without guitars. I like the fact that the guitars often throw around some discordant little atmospheres, but the bass playing cannot be overshadowed, and the drumming is very frantic, which makes for a great backbone. I don't know, the guitars just tend to be too noisy and serve far less of a purpose to me. With bass, drums, and vocals this could be a very curious piece of work. "Soumission Librement Consentie" is a six-minute masterpiece, complete with an eerie break of nothing but chorused bass and percussion with the occasional arpeggiated clean guitar line coming in - overall vaguely reminiscent of Dystopia to some degree, and by far the most powerful track on the CD. The CD comes in an interesting gatefold digipack sleeve printed in black on matte brown paper. All of the artwork is sketchy and the illustrations look as though they could have been borrowed from a book. All of the text (including the lyrics) is in French, sans one track that deals with the twisted state of the modern world: "Every single day people are starving, homeless beaten raped killed, better off dead. And what are they doing about it? Buying more weapons, building new shopping malls, destroying the wildlife or maybe a new TV show to keep us informed on what great thing they did to change the world today?" All in all this is pretty good stuff. A clearer recording would be nice, and I certainly prefer the guitar parts when they lock in with the rhythm section and become a bit more tangible. I'm intrigued, though. I'd like to hear more. What's with the band name, though? Really. Come on. That name doesn't fit this music!
