Review: Lobotomia “s/t” CD

Awesome. Another official reissue of a legendary Brazilian hardcore/punk LP on CD from Japan's Speedstate Records. Once more the mastering could probably be slightly louder, but like the Armagedom reissue this was remastered from vinyl because the original master tapes from 1986 are missing. Also from S?o Paulo, Lobotomia played a tighter and slightly more metallic brand of hardcore/punk than some of their contemporaries at the time. Many of the songs were a bit longer ("longer" as in more than four minutes), the vocals were a deeper form of shouting, and the music, while still rooted in straightforward chord progressions and basic solos, has a good amount of variety as far as tempo changes and such, as well as a harder hitting metal/rock side. "S? os Mortos N?o Reclamam" has some rocked out tempos in a slightly "catchier" framework with driving basslines and whammy bar solos galore, "Indigentes do Amanh?" is faster and thrashier with fast lead bursts, "Faces da Morte" takes the speed in a crossover sort of direction with a few heavy breakdowns, and so on. I think the sound quality of this material stands the test of time very well. The mix is pretty tight, the tones are smooth and dense, the bass plays a huge role, and the playing is really tight for the most part. It can be slightly muddy on occasion, but I'm not bothered by that at all. Very well done. Also just like the Armagedom reissue from the same label, the layout includes the original cover artwork, a band photo and some additional illustrations, and all of the lyrics in Portuguese, English, and Japanese. Here the songs deal almost exclusively with the brutality of war, with a few tracks digging into personal traumas and such. Everything is straightforward, and the redundancy of the content definitely gets across the desolate atmosphere. Another high quality reissue from Speedstate Records, a label that officially kicks ass even at this early point. $12.50ppd worldwide from Japan, you can't beat that shit. Definitely recommended.
