Despite the fact that the band name and album title may lead one to assume this is black metal, this Portuguese act's self-proclaimed tag of "Industrial Noize Perversion" is a bit more accurate, as this lengthy effort is basically made up of experimental electronics with the overall vibe of dark ambient and the percussive and rhythmic elements of industrial. Droning hums, tastefully programmed beats, a few areas of slightly melodic synths, sparse uses of samples or loops, etc. "Overtures for Violent Intercourse, Act II" brings in some snarling half-spoken vocals under a light filter of distortion, but I'm not really into that aspect of this material at all, I'm much more into the atmospheres of the music and the hypnotic repetition than I am the use of vocals or some of the faster beats. I think the distant vocals in "Innocence (Like Wolves Among Sheep)" work out very well, but the synth harmony is cheesy and doesn't really fit in with the emphatic rhythm so much. Sometimes the beats are too slow and monotonous to work in their central placement, but tracks like "Preliminary Actions" and "Overtures for Violent Intercourse, Act I" are a bit more tasteful in regards to flow and such. I don't know... most of these songs are a little too minimal and basic for me to really appreciate, not so much because they're simple, but because they're simple and they lack tonality... there's not that much feeling. Some of the samples of choral singing and pornographic moaning are also generic, so... The CD-R comes with xeroxed packaging that keeps it simple and D.I.Y. The copies are on the rough side so the imagery isn't totally clear, but it looks okay. The cover has an image of a scantily clad woman with spiked armbands on... I don't know why, but it's there. No lyrics are included, just the tracklist and contact information, so... I think this project could be very interesting under different circumstances, but I find the delivery to be confusing here. I'm not that into their concept per se, but I could overlook that if the songs were as structured and consistent as "Overtures for Violent Intercourse, Act I"... but that's rarely the case, and tracks like the unlisted closer that runs more than 20 minutes are especially bland and lacking in focus. So despite some strengths, this group needs room to grow before really turning any heads.
