Review: Kill All Resistance “Demo 2004” CD

Four tracks of grinding death metal from this duo. Their style blends significant speeds with chunky midpaced/slow rhythms and a frantic sort of approach that mixes things up with some dissonant notes or noisier areas and really frenzied drumming that's always shifting between different blasting patterns. Honestly I'm most impressed by the vocal delivery, which is basically a straight up low growl with a few midrange sneers for accents, so it sort of comes off with an early Morbid Angel vibe in that department. Ironically the one goofy track, "Lesbo Song", is one of the strongest musically, as there aren't as many changes, so the structure's a bit more linear and easy to get a hold of. "In the Name of Your God" starts out much, much slower and outright heavy than the other tracks, with some nice discordant chords as well, making for my favorite moments on the demo. It's definitely raw both performance wise and as far as the recording goes, but I sort of like the ruggedness of the recording. The guitars and bass need to be louder since the drums and vocals are definitely dominant in the mix, but were the levels evened out I think these thick, dirty tones would be alright, especially for a D.I.Y demo. The CD-R comes in a nicely printed xeroxed sleeve with a solid layout. The artwork consists largely of bleak images of obliterated landscapes, the band photos are decent, the logo is cool, etc. Lyrically the songs basically cover anti-human and anti-christian topics with a bit of a violent slant, but of course they go and make themselves look ridiculous with the aforementioned "Lesbo Song", whose lyrics are too absurd to even expand on. Absolutely intolerable. This is one of those strange 50/50 demos that really hovers in a gray area. There are some really cool things about it and some really weak aspects as well. I definitely think "In the Name of Your God" is a strong closer and the best representation of the band's attack, whereas some of the other songs get a little too jumbled and lack focus. I would highly recommend dropping the "humorous" side of things in favor of the serious side as well, but tightening up the playing and buckling down on songwriting could yield solid results, so I wouldn't rule these guys out if they get it together.
