This is strangely unique experimental noise that I can't make up my mind on. At times it's darker and more ambient in nature, with some subtle musical synths creeping into place, which I like. But other aspects are based around strange loops or quiet glitches, quirky samples and synth tones, etc. "Hand to Eye" has some strange narration going on, which is not my thing at all, and some of the programmed percussion and generally chaotic arrangements in "The Surgeon Said That Pain is Food and That it Shall Taste of Almonds" hint at the less intriguing side of this work. But "You Have Borrowed Words You Do Not Understand" is an oppressive minimal piece using nothing but incredibly thick, low bass drones and rumbles that slide back and forth and are almost inaudible in some instances. Actually the latter half of the disc is a bit more consistent and "mature" to some degree. At nearly 14 minutes "Swollen Upwards, Hitting Down" is another minimal ambient piece that uses a lot of calm bass drones and repetition with a few brighter textures cutting in at times to lend an almost ethereal edge to the track. Not bad. Aside from minor complaints with the somewhat cheesy typeface used, the packaging here is really nice. The entire jewel case and CD face have been spraypainted black with a crackled silver effect, and there's an insert that has the song titles and a small abstract photo placed inside. It's simple, and the insert looks somewhat weak, but the case looks great. This is a strange release. It's definitely 50/50. I'd say that I enjoy just about half of the disc, whereas the other half is just not something I can get into for various reasons. At its best moments on this disc would be worth a 7/10 were they isolated on an EP release of some sort, but the end result here is a rather average full-length from a group that should be on the way to greener pastures if they continue to refine their direction.
