The lineup damn near says it all with this one: Tom Capone (formerly of Beyond, Bold, Quicksand, currently in Instruction)—guitar; Jeremy Chatelain (formerly of Insight and Iceburn, later in Jets to Brazil, currently in Cub Country)—vocals; Pete Hines (formerly of Murphy's Law, the Cro-Mags, and Alloy)—drums; Peter Mengede (formerly of Helmet)—guitar; Eddie Nappi (later in Enemy)—bass. Could you possibly lose? Hell no!
Handsome formed in the early-90's sans Tom Capone, and solidified as a four-piece lineup in early-1995. Capone joined up between late-'95 and early-'96, after the band had already released two 7"s: "Waiting" on Full City Blend, and a self-titled affair that contained "Swimming" backed with "Can't Connect" on Sub Pop (the latter track was never re-recorded). After that it was their sole self-titled full-length on Epic Records in 1997, which is where it really gets good.
When the disc originally hit the streets I bought it immediately due to the presence of Capone and Mengede alone, having been an enormous Quicksand and Helmet fan, but I wasn't feeling the vocals at all, so I never really listened to it. For whatever reason, a few months later it finally clicked, and I still spin this album on a very regular basis to this day. In fact, were I to review this disc right now, I'd probably give it a 10/10, as this is one of the single most listened to CD's in my entire collection of 3,000+.
The band basically delivers a surprisingly heavy brand of moody, melodic post-hardcore chock full of spectacular songwriting, which is quite diverse and unique as well. Oddly enough, despite the vocals being the initial hitch for me, I now realize that the singing is one of the most significant factors in making this record so fucking amazing, as Chatelain possesses one of the more moving and distinctive singing styles I've ever heard, so... while perhaps an acquired taste, his presence is absolutely essential. And the songs are just ridiculous (in a good way). I've seriously probably listened to this CD over 1,000 times in eight years. "Quiet Liar" makes me want to shoot myself, "Dim the Lights" is succinct and catchy as hell (a rare twist for the album as a whole), "Ride Down" is a little more midpaced and driving... and there are plenty of other surefire keepers as well—notably "Swimming" and "Needles", among others.
I don't know what the deal is, but apparently there was some sort of "bonus disc" with an edition of this CD too, probably an import or whatever. I don't know how many songs were on it, but I've got two of 'em, and they're fuckin' great. "Closer" was supposed to be on the CD-Rom content for the standard edition, but I've never been able to get it to play via those means. Regardless, these guys are absolutely insane for not including "Spill" on the record itself, as it's hands down one of their five best songs. I could probably even argue that it's their finest track, period. It's actually pretty frustrating that such an amazing track was relegated to some unbelievably obscure "bonus disc", but at least I got the chance to hear it.
I don't see the Handsome disc available new all that often these days, but it's certainly one of those hidden treasures that's relatively easy to score used for less than $5:
If anyone knows any concrete details about the above mentioned "bonus disc", or the rumored unreleased second full-length that Handsome may or may not have recorded, for that matter, please let me know. I totally love this band and still can't make sense of the fact that they never really got their due.

damn! i had the same shit with getting over the vocals when i downloaded a few songs a while back and eventually ended up deleting them and forgot about the band. but now when i listen to it, it all sort of falls into place, i can’t believe how awesome this shit is, man. must’ve spinned “quiet liar” ten times in a row, gonna buy it for sure.
thanks for the post!

Thanks for reintroducing me to this band! I bought their album when it came out, but never really listened to it a lot, so I gave it away some time later.
Listening to these songs I have no idea why I wanted to get rid of this album, so now I’ve bought a second hand copy on eBay. ;)

I had pretty much the exact experience - bought it for TC3’s presence, and quickly tossed it aside due to the vocals. Dragged it back out later and realized the awesomeness. Anything Tom Capone touches is golden in my eyes… Now I’m gonna have to do a Beyond post!

damn, i was waiting for you to post these, i’ve had this playing nonstop the past few days! -m

Andrew: Exactly. I bought this record when it was released, solely because I was such a huge Helmet and Quicksand fan. Incidentally, I saw them at the original 9:30 Club in DC when they toured together. Incredible.
The vocals DO take some getting used to, particularly for us metalcore guys ;-). Once you acclimate, though, the vocals absolutely serve the music perfectly.
This is just one of those records—like Far’s “Tin Can ...”—that must be listened to quite a bit to fully appreciate. Thanks for reminding me.

I can’t believe I had not heard of these guys before! Unreal! Another gem!
8.5.2005 | By Anonymous
I have been telling people about this band for years. Glad someone else actually shares the same feelings as I do about how amazing this disc really is. I was lucky to get to see the band twice (once after Capone left)
Now all I need is an Into Another blog.

Tom Capone is God.
I’ve been into this for years - it’s hard to believe a lot of people missed this, thanks for posting it.
And those extra songs are new to me - awesome!
I saw these guys with Orange 9mm way back when. They were solid live.
Last time I saw Jets to Brazil I was drunk and kept yelling Handsome at Jeremy, I should have yelled insight…

Listen to this record at least once a month and an amazing road/tour record too. Jeremy Chatelain is a brilliant musician (listen to Iceburn, “Firon” for proof). The drumming on this record is top notch as well. Never was graced with their live presence, though at the rate of reunions these days, perhaps we’ll catch them on round two… though I won’t hold my breathe.

My story seems to be similar to the rest…I got the album b/c I’m a huge Helmet and old school hardcore fan but was disappointed at first with the vocals and the more mainstream “metal rock” sound to it. But within weeks, it was in my CD player constantly and buzzing in my head everywhere I went. Too bad they only lasted one album. At least now I finally got the song “Spill”—which (I think) completes my collection (the album, the 7-inches, the “Dim” Remix, the “Needles” Demo). Am I missin’ anything?
8.16.2005 | By Anonymous
there’s actually 2 seven inches… i don’t know if it was independently released or put out on a much smaller label than sub-pop

It is such a shame this band broke up. The record label really dropped the ball on it and then it caused turmoil inside the band. Most people think that Tom or Peter had to have written the material on the record but I know for a fact that one of the main creative sources in the band was Bassist Eddie Nappi, the man just gets no respect because he didn’t come from a name situation previously. Tom didn’t join the band until after they got signed to Epic. He co-wrote or wrote nearly every song on the record and also wrote a lot of the chorus hooks and even drum parts. And sat through every mix with Terry Date while the other guys fucked off. You could even ask Terry who was the most creative member in the band and who gave a shit the most. I heard he almost had a nervous breakdown when the band broke up. Someone give the guy some props. He also co-wrote , co-produced and co- mixed the song that they recorded with KRS-One,” Just to Prove a Point” on the I Got Next record. You should check that song out too…..Awesome The Handsome sound with a singer that has a pair of balls behind them….cool shit. I know Peter Mengede and Pete Hines both gave up music but Jeremy, Eddie and Tom are still going strong. People have taken notice though in 1999 he started a band called Enemy with current QOTSA guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, formerly of Failure and A Perfect Circle, the Enemy record is supposed to come out in oct sometime, on thier own label. Check out http://www.enemyonline.com. So he manages to hook up with some great musicians anyway. There is also a MYSPACE page for Enemy @ EnenyMusic. He has also been Mark Lanegan’s touring and recording bassist for the last 3 years. He has played on the Bubblegum record as well as the Mark Lanegan collaboration with Isobel Campbell from Belle and Sebastian. The other record I am looking foward to hearing as well is the Lanegan and Dulli Collabo the Gutter Twins, he played all the bass on this record and even drums on a track. So he has not been MIA like some of the other members of Handsome. The Enemy record is on a label that Troy, Eddie and Jason Slater of Snake River Conspiracy started so pay for it don’t download it for free, support the Artists.. It is awesome so you wont be throwing your money away. They will be releasing the Enemy record, a new Snake River record and also a project that consists of Troy, Eddie, Jason and Charlie Clauser the programmer from NIN called Revenge of the Triads. Also look for another band that has Eddie, Troy, Jason and Tom Capone and Eddie’s nephew, Gerard Garone keyboardist of Radio 4 on it. As well as a new Enemy record in Jan or Feb. So go and post and give that man some props he deserves it.

These guys were incredible. Great Album, Great live show, and All of the guys were very cool. I used to talk to Peter via E-mail for a while untill a month or so after Handsome parted ways. Eddie actually saw my ancient Handsome website I made about 100 years ago, and gave me an e-mail about his new stuff (Enemy). Definately wish these guys would have stuck to it.
9.14.2005 | By Anonymous
Another criminally underrated and overlooked band.
on a side(musical)note…Ghandi certainly had some similarities to Handsome.

I don’t know quite know what made me do a search for Handsome on the net today. Just was in the mood to see if there was any new site dedicated to them.
I had actually set up one of Handsome’s first shows for them once they were signed. It was at my alma matter of Hofstra University in New York. I was psyched since I was a huge Quicksand fan. They were really great and very cool guys. Tom wasn’t too interested in seeing the other bands they were playing with that evening, he wanted to know if there was a Nintendo that he could play. I went on to see them a few more times after that, but it seemed they just vanished. Next thing I knew, Jeremy was in Jets to Brazil and Quicksand was reforming (albeit VERY briefly.)
I’d be very into hearing the songs from the bonus disc but the links above don’t seem to be working. let me know if the tunes ever come back up. Thanks!

I love Handsome guitarist Peter Mengede!! I was wondering when the links for the Handsome music will work again because I really want to hear the music but the links arent working!! Sorry!
(My boyfriend is related to Peter :D)
11.4.2005 | By Anonymous
now who could that be?
Handsome is totally awesome especially with guitarist Peter Mengede, it just wouldn’t be the same without him, unfortunately Handsome Broke up Because Jeremy and Hines “couldn’t stand the sight of each other”
the Public just wasn’t ready to hear the sort of music handsome made: they were ahead of their time
11.5.2005 | By Anonymous
I agree with all of you that Handsome was one of the most underrated bands of all time.
I got into them around 97 when one of my friends showed me the record. I got hooked immediately.
Jeremy Chatelein sings like a God, it was a huge comedown to hear a Jets To Brazil record later.
Actually, I do not know anyone knowing Handsome and not eating it up… they are that good!!!

I work part time at a gym which means I am in charge of the music when I am on the clock…I always throw HANDSOME into the setlist and it still blows away the mainstream crapola 11 years later. I was lucky enough to see HANDSOME live…it was an odd line-up…Descendents, the Swingin’ Utters and some ska band I think. Handsome was tight as all hell.
