Review: Guns Liquor and Whores “Serpico” 10

Not bad! This is some grinding hardcore/punk with shitloads of distortion and a little bit of a super aggressive rocked out vibe out of Canada. Think a mix of old school hardcore and grind with some rocked out punk riffs sans any real melody whatsoever. "A Slow and Painful Death" is one of the few tracks that throws around some more noticeably metal riffs, but it still manages to stray from feeling like metal. The vocals are either shouted or screamed, but either way they're pissed and over the top, and they throw in a few quick spoken passages and samples to break it up a bit. In addition to a slew of raging originals, there's "Sick-O" (an awesome Infest cover) and "Hobbit Motherfuckers" (an awesome Turbonegro cover), so you can't really lose. I wouldn't be surprised if this whole thing was recorded live, as almost every track begins or ends with a lot of feedback and the occasional count off. But this is fucking proof that you don't need a lot of money to get a great sounding record, because this shit was recorded on a 4-track and it sounds really damn good. It's fairly raw, but in a good way, and it's mixed well so that the bass is always pounding away, the drums sound forceful and dense, and the guitars and vocals have a lot of roughness to them without being distracting or thinning things out too much. Take notes, boys and girls. This is how it should be done. The layout is also badass. The record comes in a black, white, and red sleeve with lots of awesome high contrast graphics (most of which are pretty abstract) and then there's a black and white insert with a similar look that includes some band photos and all of the lyrics (sans cover songs). Most of the lyrics deal with "the scene", but believe it or not the attacks are pointed and honest, and actually admirable... it's not the same old shit, and they don't hold back either. "You treat punk rock like it's high school with your clique and all your friends. And in the process alienate those who aren't here as a mere means to an end. You'll never weigh the merits of a critical eye. It's not in your nature to ever ask why. I see this shit five out of seven days, and this one environment where it has no place..." Good stuff. And I love that band name. I've read a few reviews of this record that talk shit about the band name. No way. If you don't like this band's name, you're a loser. Check this shit out. I'm diggin' it.
