With a band name like Grindcorps, your band ought to be the most awesome example of textbook grind ever. But after "Groin Grabbing Grind" opens with a sample of some comedy TV show or something, it becomes apparent that this duo doesn't live up to their name at all, dropping two tracks of sloppy, noisy drum machine grindcore with barked vocals and a few ripping guitar riffs and programmed blasts in there somewhere. The playing seems tight when you can actually hear it, but the recording sucks and the vocals dominate the mix, so... in addition to wholly boring songwriting the production, D.I.Y. or not, ain't helpin' out. The same goes for Asscavern, where it took me a few seconds to realize that this is not a harsh noise band, but instead a grindcore solo project, because 90% of the material just sounds like a wall of distortion. Occasionally a riff pops out along with deep vocal growls or drum machines, but it basically sounds like swirling distorted noise - quite literally. The dude might have some cool riffs on his hands it seems, but the recording is ridiculously bad, so I'm not really enjoying listening to this stuff. He definitely needs to achieve more clarity in the future so that the listener can even begin to gauge what the band has to offer. I mean, a couple of tracks literally seem like harsh noise with power electronics vocals or something, but there are instruments being played back there - believe it or not. The 7" is pressed on bright red vinyl and comes in a color sleeve with childish looking illustrations of monsters and half nude female barbarians or some shit, so... it's not really doing much for me. I have no clue where the bands are from, but this time the track titles and lineups are clearer, and I could actually read the band logos without searching the web for more information, so that's a plus, I guess. But really, I don't know why anyone would release this shit. If I was in a band that sounded like this I wouldn't even release it myself. I'm not even sure I'd play it for friends. Sorry, I mean... even the most primal, grating black metal has stronger sound quality than this EP.
