This CD single for "Turn the Page" was recently released with two versions of the aforementioned track and one new piece ("Last Call", of course). "Turn the Page" is basically the "ballad" from the band's full-length, driven by clean guitars and using some excellently sung female vocals for the chorus - a stark contrast to the band's usual material, but a direction that still works for them. The only difference between the "single version" and the "album version" of the song is that the "single version" is about 40 seconds shorter, making it run right around four minutes. It seems sort of pointless in my opinion to cut off a mere 40 seconds of the track to make it a single, but I guess that's what you have to do to get played on the radio? I don't really know much about that. "Last Call" mixes clean and heavy breaks with some nice melodic solos and some rhythmic vocal patterns that are a definite step up in my opinion. The recording isn't quite as smooth/full on this song as the material on the full-length was, which is a shame, but it sounds okay. And hell, the song is pretty damn good, so... The CD comes in a slim cardboard slipcase with an insert for the lyrics. Everything is printed in full color and looks consistent as far as the imagery goes. It's cool that they included the lyrics, as most CD singles don't do that. The new song follows the same lines as the material from the full-length as far as being personal and fairly drawn out. "They say life is what happens when you're making other plans. When I wake up and every second seems like a second lost, I think about the time I've lost. But time won't heal the way I feel, I try not to cry when I try to heal. Never got out what's inside of me, this is my chance to show the man in me and I can say I am me and ask myself, ask myself..." It would have been nice if "Last Call" had been recorded in time to appear on "Live Life Large" because I don't really see the need to purchase this single just for one new song, but it is a solid effort nonetheless.
