Review: Fucked Up “Baiting the Public” 7”

Here's some more rocked out hardcore punk from these Canadians with awesome vocals that are gruff yells that actually sort of hit notes. The songs are simple and to the point, with a few quick little lead runs and subtle hints of melody that definitely keep things memorable. "Baiting" is a catchier track, while "The Public" is a bit more consistently melodic, but either way these two tracks are my favorites yet from Fucked Up - they're somewhat more midpaced, but the writing feels a lot more immediate to me. The recording is really raw but works perfectly for their style. Everything is totally dry, the bass is mixed just as loud as the guitars, and the vocals are a little out front. The vocals definitely drive things to me, so I'd like for the rhythm guitars to have a little bit more clarity, but the bass tends to hold down the chord progressions perfectly so I'm not bothered. The 7" comes in a basic xeroxed sleeve with an illustration of a woman in bed with a bunch of rats on the cover, and a photo of two naked guys fighting in front of a large crowd inside. Some jumbled text (possibly lyrics) is below the photo, but it's so scattered that you can't really make anything out. Not bad. I definitely enjoy this more than their last EP. I hope they continue down this path.
