Holy shit, I heard this Canadian band's last CD and it was good but not great drum machine grind. This promo, however, offers up two tracks from their split CD with Sergent Slaughter and two from their split CD with Feeble Minded, and most of these tracks are way better! The cuts from the Sergent Slaughter split are like raging melodic black metal, whereas the other two are far more chaotic and have a grinding, technical metalcore sort of style, but they're all pretty good. Of course the metalcore sounding songs are a lot more derivative, and aside from some blinding tech riffs or sick dissonant breakdowns do little for me, but the black metal-ish songs are fucking awesome! They're quick tracks but the melodies and the energy just rage right through with a lot of atmosphere, definitely in the tradition of the genre's classics, but with its own sort of contemporary spice. Of course the recordings are a little rugged and unbalanced, but I can live with it. I'd like to hear less emphasis on the drums and a bit more cohesion to the mix (the metalcore songs are way too noisy to get a really good grasp on), but I don't mind the fact that it's raw at heart. The CD-R comes in a simple xeroxed sleeve with minimal text/artwork. It's just a sampler of sorts, so that gets the job done. Not bad at all. The black metal tracks are newer and I feel that's definitely where the band should be headed... those opening two songs really got my attention.
