Review: Death Amphetamine “s/t” CD

Another demo that just doesn't do it for me. I'm not into the vocals at all. They're generally upper-midrange snarls or slight growls, but then sometimes he does this weird raspy singing thing too, and that stuff's just awful. Musically some of the riffs are great, just ripping fast grindcore styled material with some thrash in there, maybe a little crossover. But then they throw in these melodic solos and some moderately paced guitar harmonies, and that side of it, aside from being weak, just doesn't fit at all. And the songwriting is flawed as well, as there are cool riffs but none of the songs are all that great. The drummer's pretty tight and does some nice cymbal work here and there, but aside from that and the thrashy riffing I'm not into it. I guess I can handle the recording for a demo, it's not horrible, but the mix is totally unbalanced. The vocals overpower the music a little bit, and the drums are clearer than everything else, so it's sort of jumbled. There's too much midrange in the guitar tone, it needs more crunch to thicken this stuff up and make it sound more up front. The CD-R comes in a black and white sleeve with minimal artwork and plenty of text, granted it does look a little pixilated. The lyrics are longer and more abstract than expected, which works in the band's favor. Nothing mindblowing, but I've seen plenty worse. "The cancer here is spreading day by day. Can't you feel your body rot away? It's to the point there's nothing left to say. Life hastens your death. It stays that way. Sentient beings we are forced into a world of total devastation. The only question is who draws the lines in the next step of evolution?" Sorry guys, it's just not clicking with me as a whole. The playing is pretty on the level and those thrash riffs kick ass, but I hate the solos, the vocals rub me the wrong way, and the songs just don't hit me.
