Deadfood kicks it off in "Fuz On" with some weird jazzy passages ala Mr. Bungle or something like that, then heads into some strange keyboards and filtered singing that's hard to hear until it shifts over to wild screams. Distortion eventually comes in with some roaming basslines and more Bungle-isms, which continue even more so in "Dirty Dishes", which at times is an almost blatant ripoff of Mr. Bungle circa "California" (crooning and all). It's not my thing 99% of the time, but the jazzy percussion is admittedly excellent. I love the rhythm section, but the rest is so-so and definitely unoriginal. The production is basically fine, most of the time the mix is clear and the bass and drums sound cool, so fuck it. Irritate (Finland) takes side B with two tracks of simple metallic hardcore with tons of chunky chords and a little sludgy rock backing burly vocal growls. However, the fast parts do nothing for me and I find the songwriting to be horribly boring. There's no energy and the vocals just feel totally forced. I'd say there's maybe one good riff out of the entire bunch. The packaging here is sort of weak as well, with a strange print quality and cluttered lettering over inconsistently colored artwork that sort of only fits in with Deadfood's half of the record. The split's numbered of only 515 copies, but I'm guessing it's still available. Deadfood does have more potential than I expected based on the appearance of this thing, they just lack focus. But Irritate? Boring. I've gotta pass on this one.
