Review: Catholic Priest “Demo-nology” CD

This is the solo project from a former guitarist of The Index who currently plays in Triac and has also done time in Hatebeak. I guess this would best be described as wacky experimental noise that sounds like most of it was or could have been done with a Casio keyboard and some effects. There are lots of simple drumbeats, childlike keyboard parts, broken up arrangements, and a little bit more at times. "Skullduggery", for instance, uses some more complex keyboard arrangements along with some guitars and various beats, some of which are sort of techno-ish. "Carp" presents spoken/growled vocals amidst a whirlwind of chaotic electronics that sound like fucked up and twisted video game music with the occasional beat popping up out of nowhere. "Slutlord" brings in some weird low-end notes amongst bluesy unstructured guitar leads and more bizarre electronic noise that sounds synth oriented, though it's actually a bit more humorous this time in its use of programmed beats and harmonized vocals and such. The sound is pretty good, and I would assume that this might have been recorded entirely through digital means. Everything is clear and smooth, with an even mix. So I'm not bothered by the sound quality at all. The CD-R has a black and white label on top with some gears and some interesting lettering. The front cover has the logo in full color (complete with shattered stained glass window, dollar sign, and upside down cross), and the back has a tracklist as well as some other text defining music as "vocal or instrumental sounds possessing no degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm". I don't know. I can't say this is my thing. Parts I like, parts I see no real value in whatsoever. I'm generally not a big fan of anything that has that kiddie sort of Casio sound to it or seems to be geared towards weird humor. Sometimes this is pretty funny, and there's some subtle complexity here that I can appreciate. But overall there are only a couple of songs that I really like, and I can't gauge what the true intent is...
