Review: Burmese “Treaties of Greed and Filth” 7”

Here's some incredibly noisy grind with tons of low-end, off kilter blast beats, and sludgy feedback with the occasional burst of cackling vocal screams under a veil of distortion. The mass quantities of low-end actually come thanks to the band have two bassists and no guitar player. I like the slower riffs with deeper vocals more than anything. The rest of this stuff is just too chaotic and nonsensical in its lack of cohesion to really do anything for me. The recording is way too muddy, so aside from the drums everything is really messy and hard to make out. There's no definition at all, I can make out the vocals at times, but other than that it's just a chaotic blur. Side B, "Live War", is almost total noise. If I didn't have an insert telling me that there were four people taking on bass, drums, and vocals, as well as "covering" a few tracks (Black Flag and the Brainbombs), I'd think it was total noise and nothing more. The sound is horrendous. I'm talking Radio Shack boombox stuff. It's just bits and pieces of live recordings faded and cut together. There's not even a tracklist. It ends with a locked groove of low, droning feedback... and that's the best part. The record comes in a full color sleeve (well, one side is black and white) that looks to have been printed from a home computer and pasted on top of an existing 7" sleeve for stability. The images and text are pixilated, and the insert is all text with lineup and recording information. I like the image on the color cover, it just looks too unprofessional as a whole. I just can't get into this stuff, I don't see the point here. If the mix was clearer they'd at least have something going for them, but honestly it sounds like anyone could make this racket if they wanted to. Oh well, I'll leave it alone at that...
