Review: Below the Sound “More Like a Gunshot Than a Car Wreck” CD

I'm sorry, but this is one of those CD's that just screams, "Why was this ever released!?" Layout = crap. Lyrics = crap. Production = crap. Music = could be better, but with this awful recording there's really not a lot to salvage. The production and presentation of this release are definitely the real killers. Musically it's not great, but there are some moments that are okay. The band plays fairly typical noisy, math rock-ish type stuff with throaty vocal yells, but even though the songs are short, it's still really boring. I'm not all that into this stuff in the first place, but either way, you really need a warm, dense recording to pull this style off. And the recording is just awful. The guitar tone is completely unnatural and sounds like it was recorded direct (with no amp) from guitar, to distortion pedal, to recording device. The basslines are strong but the bass tone is the weakest I've ever heard. Since when is the bass thinner and more trebly than the guitars? The drums do sound okay, as do the vocals to a degree, but the obscenely inappropriate bass and guitar tones, in addition to some mixing issues, seal this CD's coffin from the start. Thicken up that bass, smooth out the guitars, tighten the mix and make sure everything is beefy and ripe with texture, and then you'll be on the right track. This honestly sounds like a rough one-take demo or something to me. I don't know... As mentioned earlier the layout's not that hot. It's mostly black and white with some red, but there are some high contrast images that are tinted in other faint colors as well. It just looks incredibly bland. It's one of the most uninteresting layouts I've ever seen, simply because the images are boring, the text is as simple as possible and the fonts are way too... I don't know... just, not the right choices. I'm not into the lyrics at all. They're really cryptic, and while some of the lines are interesting, the clouded references to masturbation, pig fucking, and other such sexual tidbits leave me with no interest in what the content of the songs has to offer. Thankfully this CD's short, so it's not like they wasted an hour's worth of material here. Seriously, I hate to be so rude, but people really need to think things through before they throw down the money that it takes to put together a record. With a more suitable recording and visual presence this could be an entirely different record.
