Moment of Youth - s/t

Moment of Youth "s/t" 7"
[Parts Unknown]

Here's some classic styled hardcore with simple chord progressions and straightforward vocal yells. The songs are relatively fast and basic without a whole lot of variation, but tracks like "C.A." are a lot catchier and have more of a punk influence. I'd definitely say that this stuff is heavily driven by early 80's hardcore influences, it's no frills hardcore with attitude and aggression, but it's not concerned with being over the top heavy or pissed off or anything, it is what it is, and I like that. I think these guys might be from DC, which wouldn't surprise me because I can definitely hear some Minor Threat and other such similarities popping up in some of these songs. The recording is pretty dry, but I like it because they've mixed the bass really loud so that keeps things dense. It's all totally natural, and the mix works nicely because the guitar distortion is pretty light, so the bass and the guitars are literally dead even. The record comes on great clear vinyl in a simple black and white sleeve with a black and white insert (all pro-printed). Moment of Youth is a fitting band name because these kids look really young, which is cool. The illustration on the sleeve has a bunch of businessmen/politicians running around DC with flags in their hands and TV sets on their heads, and the insert has some band photos and the lyrics. The lyrics are pretty typical, but they get the job done: "Drop your fucking fake façade, I don't want your bullshit at all, Make up your mind, Who do you want to be? The answer is yourself, Stop fucking with me." Not bad. I could see this band really doing some damage down the road. I could use a little more energy here, as "C.A." blows most of the other songs away, but this is definitely a solid effort. (6/10)
