Love Songs "s/t" CD
[Impatience or Indifference]
Ehhh... I can't make up my mind on this one. This is a one-man band from the guitarist of What Happens Next? playing mildly humorous pop punk-ish/rock type stuff with a raw sound that works out fairly well. Now, if you ask me, to call 25 songs and 45 minutes of this overkill is a massive understatement, as 15 minutes would be more than enough to show you what this project is about, give you a laugh, and leave it at that. I think the humor starts to get lost when it seems to continue on, and on, and on, and on... The seven-minute "I Turned Into a Medley" with its acoustic renditions of bits and piece of various Misfits tunes (of course) is actually really fucking great. Throw that shit on a one-sided 7" and you've got yourself a winner. But like I said... 25 songs. 45 minutes. I'm tired, know what I mean? There are some great songs here, some of the guitar riffs are fucking awesome, and the catchiness reminds me of some of the better Fat Wreck bands at their peak, but the vocals sound too overly sarcastic, and that sort of messes up the listening experience for me. I guess this is a joke, but the thing is, it could be pretty damn good if it was taken a bit more seriously. Some of the ridiculous songs like "The No-Pants Party" are fucking hilarious, I will admit, but I'd really like to hear this stuff taken further, because the guy does have a great sense of humor and seems to be a very competent musician. Of course the sound is a little off since this is a one-man deal, but it sounds pretty good. The vocals are a little dry and sound separated from the music, but overall it works out fine considering the circumstances. The layout is all done in red, white, and black, and the illustrations are simple, if not crude. I like the cover, but the back is, well... I'm glad it's the back and not the front. Lyrically... what can I say? "Because we were alone we had sex on the phone. You helped me rub one out." Doesn't that say it all, really? The lyrics aren't very serious, and well, they don't particularly amuse me. It is, however, pretty funny that the lyrics are printed on the back of an Internal Revenue Service document explaining Employee 1099-Misc forms. Nice. I wouldn't say the "liner notes" are a necessity with this one, though. Ahhh, shit. I don't know. This is good for a couple of laughs, but there are only a handful of truly amusing songs. I'd be all about hearing this done with a little more effort, but I guess that would defeat the purpose? (5/10)
