Leng Tch'e "Man Made Predator" CD
[Willowtip]
Another blistering full-length of in your face, sarcastic grindcore from Belgium with plenty of death/thrash riffing, some rockin' sludgy breaks, scathing distorted screams as well as low growls, the works. The tracks rarely top two minutes, they just tear through relentlessly and go for the throat. I love it. On a musical level this is precisely how grindcore should be. It's got all of the classic elements as well as its own little quirks, and it's all power with no time wasted on tedium. You've got your more diverse tracks like "Too Stupid to Live" that display the band's complete range of influences, and then you've got your fast and straightforward ragers like "Life is an S.T.D.". Good stuff. The recording is pretty fucking awesome. I could deal with a more natural drum sound, but the guitar tone is fucking incredible - thick and nasty with great texture, and the bass throbs away fucking perfectly behind it. The vocals sound fine and are placed right behind the guitars in the mix, so everything sounds suitable to me. The guitar sound alone makes this thing a winner... just check out the crushing mosh of "5 Minutes of Fame". The layout's not so bad. It's got some goofy imagery happening in certain instances, but that's all due to the band's sense of humor. Hell, there are songs called "You Fat Prick" and "Sick Brutal Gore Bastard (Keep it Fucking Sick)", after all. Not to mention that the traycard boldly reads, "Still grinding from da hood, y'all." Most of the lyrics follow suit, rarely tackling serious topics like racism or what have you, and generally just making fun of hippies, hardcore kids, and all sorts of other victims. "You say you're really sick and brutal, You write that you want a lot more gore, I'd like to put you with the real toughguys, And let you ride with an ambulance, Hacked up to pieces, bathing in blood, But in reality you would just faint..." This is great stuff. If you liked their last record then this one won't let you down. If you've never heard 'em before? Get with it. (7/10)
