Guyana Punch Line - s/t

Guyana Punch Line "s/t" 7"
[When Humans Attack!]

Not unlike their latest full-length on Prank, this sweet EP throws out some blistering hardcore/punk with tons of energy and a tightly honed performance that seems ready to fly off the handle at any time. The standout here is "No Contest", starting out with some quick dissonant notes before plunging into some caustic speed and lighting fast changes, still throwing in some twisted melody throughout. "Not Even That" also includes some more complex riffing and rhythms that are really interesting, so despite the fact that the entire 7" is over in a flash, it's got its memorable moments. The recording is a little bit thinner and perhaps slightly clearer than the CD in some respects, but I miss the heaviness and the overt bass presence of the CD a bit, and the vocals are a little too far out front here. It still sounds strong, and it works, but it's not as powerful. The bass playing is far too important to fall to the distance. The record comes on clear blue vinyl, and the band's unusual sense of humor is displayed throughout the artwork again, as George W. Bush straddles a tank like a rodeo cowboy on the cover while some strange men wearing masks do a little dance, and inside there are plenty of penises and fists to go around. The lyrics are inside, as is an additional insert full of predominantly backwards text, so everything looks pretty wild (and I especially enjoy the odd green color against the metallic silver ink). And again, I enjoy the lyrics in their bluntness: "Life is like a box of chocolates, a thoughtless gift no one ever asks for..." Another solid release. I'd recommend the CD over this, but for such a quick 7" this packs a punch. (7/10)
