Security Threat "The Order" CD
[Full House]
God fucking damn right! This is great shit. This vegan/vegetarian straightedge band from Finland blows through six tracks of rough as nails metallic hardcore in less than 20 minutes, and this shit hits the spot with me, because I'm so fuckin' tired of modern metalcore, and this is a total throwback to real metalcore. Pummeling mosh parts galore, more involved metal riffing akin to something that the Cro-Mags might have done on "Alpha Omega" or something (check out the twisted melodic chords in "Declaration of War"), and ridiculously heavy rhythms not unlike something you'd expect from Crowbar or whatever. And what about "To Remind Us"!? Out of nowhere they throw in some lead lines and crazy melodic parts, including catchy singing vocals!? Wild. It works, though. I'm all for it. A lot of the straightforward stuff sounds similar to Hatebreed, but the songs are definitely not so simple or one-sided, and the vocals are deeper and a lot more textured. The recording rules. The guitars are loud as fuck and really crunchy, the bass tone is phenomenal, the drums and vocals sound fine, the mix is pretty tight... I don't spot any immediate problems. This shit sounds really nice. If every release on Full House had this recording, I'd be a happy man! The layout's not bad at all, everything is clean and consistent, and the text is easy to read. My only complaint is that there are way too many posed band photos in the booklet. The booklet is pretty huge, but every other page, including the center spread and the front cover, has a posed band photo, which basically equates to four guys standing around in a different location from a different angle, and that's sort of a waste of space. Lyrically every one of these songs deals with straightedge or animal rights on some level, be it a cry for total war against degradation, or a commentary on the perils of addiction. "As the calm sets before the storm, We'll bow down to face our judgment, Step by step, the legion marches on, The life we live must be deserved, As the first drops of rain land on my face, one question remains... Who shall be able to stand?" It may not be original, but this is a killer EP nonetheless. I'd love to hear more from this band down the road. (8/10)
