Hewhocorrupts "Ten Steps to Success" CD
[Sinister/625]
10 tracks of blistering and all over the place grindcore in 14 minutes. If you're a fan of ridiculously fast and tight drumming, thundering basslines, guitar riffs that jump from stuttered chords to high speed frenzies of sharp changes, and fucked up vocal shrieks and squeals that tend to sound not unlike Mike Patton on a less than coherent day, then you should look into this. "Mic Marker Checked (Step 3: Repeat the Checking of Self)" starts slower and uses discordance more tactfully, and "She's a Fire Engine (Step 5: Drink Lots of Water)" begins with an unbeatable sample from "Office Space" (I can't believe I don't hear that sample used more often) and ends up dropping some borderline death metal riffs for a short time... but for the most part expect lots of speed, some burly breaks, a few eccentric complex riffs, etc. It's fairly standard, and not always interesting, but they are tight as fuck and tend to come up with stronger riffs than many of their contemporaries. As for the production, the drums sound really fucking weird. The snare and the cymbals sound pretty good, but the kicks are totally whacked out. I love that the bass plays a large role, as usually these types of bands let the bass sort of fall to the back, and the really tight guitar sound that's both heavy and abrasive is a part of what lets the bass have its own space. It sounds pretty good as far as clarity goes, but I think it needs a more rounded low-end and a closely knit mix that won't make the drums sounds separated. The layout's not bad. Mostly shades of green with some black and metallic gold text (often overlapped chaotically for effect). The lyrics are totally insane: "It's time to season the fruit garden sister. Jesus asked me to put your name backwards on the marquee. I pleaded the fifth and headed into the legs of a pregnant entrepreneur. The invention we made was lathered in a correction so political it would blow that flap right off your bow tied ass. Humdinger shouts the scum of a pastor as the brothel sings the new church hymns. That liberal money brought through the ladder day. And oh by the way the monk said suck the entrepreneur." Right, right, I get it. But I like this. They have some incredible moments, and the EP is short and to the point. My only minor complaint, aside from slight recording issues, would be that the songs all tend to sound very similar to one another, and I think a few more dynamic shifts would help out. I can definitely appreciate this, though. And I bet this band will fuck some shit up in the future. (6/10)
