Eyes of Fire "Disintegrate" CD
[Century Media]
This all too brief EP comes from the band formerly known as Shiva, featuring ex-members of the mighty Mindrot. Eyes of Fire continues in a similar direction, focusing on sheer intensity and emotion through crushing moderately paced chord progressions and lush clean passages, never shedding the emphasis on rhythm and percussion. The vocals range from forceful low shouts to excellent singing complete with vocal harmonies. Heavy effects saturate the guitars at times, creating various layers of textures the swirl about, and on rare occasion the very subtle use of samples will drift into the background. The overtly melodic and personal "Hopeless" is by far the strongest offering of the disc - definitely moving material. "Anyone" is also incredible, a bit darker and more somber in its distant vocals and dense walls of guitars (both clean and distorted). Fucking awesome. The production is great. I have no complaints. The guitars are heavy as shit but perfectly clear, the clean guitars sound excellent, the drums are fine, the vocals are well placed, and the bass is audible. I might like to hear a tad more bass, but again, everything sounds very fucking good. The layout is fairly minimal, using some dark background textures, a typeface that mimics handwritten text, and some simple icons of a flame, but it looks pretty good to me. The simplicity works. Lyrics are included for the title track, and they're about as bleak as one would imagine: "We watch this world come to an end, Our bodies slowly turn to rust, Crushing this world destroys my soul, Falling away to our silent path..." Their full-length ,"Ashes to Embers", should be out early next year I believe. I definitely can't wait to check that one out. Fans of Mindrot should absolutely be into this. (8/10)
