Ulcerrhoea/Sewn Shut "split" 7"
[Sounds of Betrayal]
Ulcerrhoea (Germany) begins with six tracks of completely primal, blasting grindcore with a few overt hardcore influences, reminding me somewhat of early Napalm Death on some level. Expect totally relentless speed with twisted midrange vocal screams. The one thing killing their material is the recording, which is far too messy. It's on the muddy side, and guitars and drums dominate, with the vocals ending up almost impossible to decipher. It's not that bad, with a little more clarity it would work fine, but as it stands a lot of detail disappears and the messiness deadens the impact. Their lyrics are quiet brief, often only a couple of lines per song, and they include equally succinct explanations as well. "Consumed by all conventional, Succumb to routine existence." Sewn Shut (Sweden) crank out another five tracks of their death metal driven grindcore, and they never fail to please. There are some generally slower tracks like "Fall to Extinction" this time around, but they never neglect faster tempos for too long. They've got another solid recording for their style as well. The drums are surprisingly crisp and clean, the guitar tone has plenty of nasty distortion, and the vocals are mixed barely in front of the music. The bass is in there thickening everything up, but it's not that noticeable in most cases. They omit the lyrics this time, but I don't care because they fucking kick ass. The 7" comes in a black, white and green sleeve with some sweet artwork, and inside is a matte insert (black and white) with one side going to each band. Another strong split from Sounds of Betrayal. I can't totally get into the Ulcerrhoea side, but Sewn Shut definitely takes it home. (6/10)
