v/a "Soun: An Anonymous and Random Compilation/Composition" compilation 7"
[Gameboy]
As expressed by the title, this 7" (one-sided) contains one track that is comprised of 100 individual sound submissions from 100 different artists in the experimental noise realm. Some of the many, many, many participants are Aube, Bastard Noise, Cock ESP, Goat, Hrvatski, Lockweld, Merzbow, Ovum, Spastic Colon, and John Wiese - to but an absolute few. As one would expect the track is simply a jumble of different sounds, many more musical and "sample" based than anticipated, others more typically noisy and rumbling, etc. From harsh noise to scattered cutups to ambient drones and everything in between, this one's got it all. Sometimes you can tell when one submission ends and another begins, other times several seconds will go by and you feel that you may or may not be listening to the same piece. It works out well. I'm not sure how painstakingly arranged the different parts were, but I like it, and it's an awesome idea for a compilation. My only suggestion, in retrospect, would be to have mastered the record louder, as the output levels seem extremely quiet, and it's impossible to keep adjusting the volume when the quieter submissions roll past in a blur. The record comes in a nice sleeve with a chaotic design that overlaps electrical diagrams and such over a white background, listing all of the contributors on the back. Neato. I bet this is limited edition, but I'm not sure if it's sold out or what? (7/10)
