Neuro-Visceral Exhumation/Mesrine "Extermination of Mankind" split 7"
[2+2=5]
Neuro-Visceral Exhumation (São Paulo, Brazil) starts off side A with four tracks of brutal death/grind, complete with blasting speeds, crushing mosh breaks, and ultra low growls. They've got a fairly tight performance, with only a few slight falters in the drumming - mainly noticeable because the mix is dominated by drums and vocals. The recording's not bad at all, it's raw, but were the guitars and bass louder in the center it would sound great. The vocals and drums sound fine, but the mix leaves the core too far in the distance. The songs can tend to sound similar to one another, but again that's due in part to the guitars being quiet... I like this, there's some good shit going on in here. Mesrine (Canada) take side B with four tracks of raw as fuck death/grind recorded live on a 4-track. Think raging speeds, moderate breakdowns, vocals that jump from growls to manic screams, etc. The production is really pretty damn good for a live 4-track recording. It does sound somewhat unbalanced, and of course very rough around the edges, but there's a solid level of density present, and you can tell what's going on. "Bean", which is slightly slower and offers more vocal tradeoffs, is a definite standout. The 7" comes in a black and white sleeve with some red lettering for the band logos, and plenty of images of, well, nasty gore. Neither band includes lyrics, instead opting for thanks lists and such, but that's not a big concern here. Not bad. Another cool international split from 2+2=5. I'd love to hear more from Neuro-Visceral Exhumation with a proper mixing job! (6/10)
