Let it Burn - Hello Good Friend

Let it Burn "Hello Good Friend" CD
[Alone]

This CD contains tracks from a 7", a split 7" with The Scarlet Letter, and an unreleased Rolling Stones cover from this melodic hardcore/punk band. There's definitely a lot of rock involved here, and the songs are fairly catchy as well. The handclaps and eccentric singing edge in "Hang on to Yourself" is a little too far towards that whole "next big thing" rehashed rock 'n' roll sound for me to handle, but I love more melodic tracks like "Hello Good Friend". "On Angels Wings" is a short, fast, to the point hardcore/punk song with no frills, as is "Circles and Squares", and the rock-ish elements of such tracks are well implemented. As for the Rolling Stones cover... I fucking hate the Rolling Stones. I think they're one of the worst bands of all time, and I hate almost ever cover of their songs that I've ever heard. These guys' rendition of "Miss You" doesn't change my stance on that. It's listenable, but if you take a shitty song and cover it, it's gonna suck unless you really change it and make it your own, which they haven't done. The production's fine for what they're doing. It's pretty dry and somewhat rugged, but the mix is even, and I'm not bothered by anything. The vocals are sort of high-pitched, so they can stand out a little, but the bass is there, the drums sound fine, and guitars definitely drive the songs, so... The layout is simple, using high contrast black, white, and red graphics, and a killer bright pink on the CD face (which has clear edges so that the image overlaps the traycard). I'm pretty surprised by how personal and borderline sappy the lyrics are, so I'm not a big of that angle, but whatever. "Someday soon we will be miles apart. But no distance can change the feelings that are in my heart. And if you feel alone I will come and rescue you, there's nothing in the world that I would rather do." I don't know. This isn't bad, but it's not that exciting either. The disc is over in a flash, which is good because it's not boring, but at the same time I wouldn't mind hearing more to see what I really make of this band. (6/10)
