John Wiese/Gerritt "Tour" 7"
[Misanthropic Agenda]
This limited edition 7" was only sold on the John Wiese/Gerritt west coast tour that took place earlier this year. John Wiese takes side A with an untitled track of shuffling and clicking samples that sound like some sort of machine, combined with sizzling distortion and some oddball bassy hums and blips. For some reason I could imagine this being the soundtrack to a weird little short film or something... don't ask me why... it just has this weird sort of narrative quality to it. Strange, indeed. Gerritt follows up on side B with a nice blend of cutting distortion and manipulated sounds that have good movement and sort of a dark ambient vibe on some level. Even the harsh areas aren't overly harsh, there's a definite atmosphere and this weird sort reverse reverb thing going on. Both side A and side B are consistent and repetitive, and that's a good thing on this record because it keeps things cohesive, but not boring. The record comes on high quality vinyl in a stiff clear sleeve with a simple insert that uses minimal color and some line drawings alongside plain text and some handwriting. Very minimal, about as minimal as you can get, but definitely effective. This is a nice little split. There's not much to it, so there's not a whole lot to say. If there are any leftovers from the tour you might want to give it a shot. (7/10)
Running time - 10:00 (approximately), Tracks: 2
