Gruesome Stuff Relish "Last Men in Gore" CD
[Motosierra]
36 tracks in 36 minutes from this Spanish gore grind act. This CD contains 13 unreleased tracks that were originally supposed to be released as a 7" called "Last Men Alive", 18 tracks from the band's "Brothers in Gore" split CD with Brutality Reigns Supreme, and five other unreleased tracks that were recorded in early 2003 - all of which has been remastered. The new songs sound almost identical to early Entombed meets classic Carcass. They've got that raging Swedish death metal guitar tone down pat, the riffs range from fast and furious to low and pulverizing, there are tons of vocal tradeoffs between sick low growls and snarling higher screams, you know the drill... if you heard their record on Razorback you'll know what you're in for. Of course the older songs are a bit rawer, and they actually have a more straightforward approach. The recording doesn't have that Swedish bite to it, and the vocals are a bit more manic and nothing strikes me as particularly Carcass-like, sans a few rhythms here and there. It's rugged, but it tends to work. Sometimes the low vocals get lost (which is better than having them overpower), the mixes tend to be thick and fairly even, etc. The layout keeps things simple. Images of zombies broken up into squares with small text and lots of blank space, and the cover is sort of laid out like a movie poster, etc. The lyrics are only included for the handful of songs that were recorded this year, and of course they deal with death and gore, you know what to expect. I like the newer tracks better than the old songs just because the feel is a bit more memorable (though the recordings are honestly more consistent on the older songs), but this is all better than average material. It's nothing new, and some of the older tracks wear thin, but I can appreciate it. (6/10)
Running time - 36:16, Tracks: 36
[Notable tracks: Broken Gravestones, Stone Knives, Green Inferno, El Duce Inn Massacre, Eaten Alive, Meat is Murder!, Savage Flesh Eaters]
