Embalming Theatre/Sewn Shut - split

Embalming Theatre/Sewn Shut "split" 7"
[Putrid Filth Conspiracy]

Side A has Embalming Theatre (Switzerland) churning out some vicious death/grind with great low vocal growls and a nice mix of tempos. Four tracks plus an intro and an outro, including an awesome cover of "Satanist" by the Filthy Christians, which definitely stands out from the other songs. They've got a totally raw recording here. It's not that bad, it just lacks low-end. The vocals are a little loud, though not a major problem, and guitars are somewhat thin but well textured... it just needs some bass to fill in the gaps. Pretty good stuff. The lyrics are interesting too, taking a different spin on the usual gore topics by exploring bizarre real life scenarios: "Get stimulated now, You need it you want it, And you can get it, Nature's hidden power, Hidden in animals' genetics, Feel the force in your libido, Prefer the rarest animals on earth, Spend cash for their best parts, Killed for a damn one night stand in Asia." Sweden's Sewn Shut rips through five tracks of fucking brutal grind with some dark crust/death metal overtones. I had forgotten how great this band is! The vocal tradeoffs between low growls and higher sneers remind me of Carcass, and there are some plodding breakdowns and a lot more metal influences popping up here. The production is rough around the edges, but definitely gets the job done. The mix can be noisy since the guitars have a real bite going on, but there's a lot of low-end crunch, and the vocals are kept in check. Awesome. The lyrics are all bleak as fuck and deal with the twisted mistreatment of human life that can come at the hands of political power games: "To increase the country's population, contraceptives were banned and abortions were virtually forbidden, which spawned a generation of abandoned children. Turned 23 million Romanians into zombies with the sole purpose of producing for the state and the pharaonic lifestyle of the ruling family." The 7" comes in a black, white, and blue sleeve printed on matte paper, devoting one half of the sleeve to each band for artwork and lyrics. This is a damn good split. (7/10)
