The Day Everything Became Nothing "Le Mort" CD
[No Escape]
Damn right... this is some vicious Australian death/grind with members of Fuck... I'm Dead and Blood Duster, and this is their debut CD. The songs are relatively short, all at or under three minutes, most around two, and the tracks are chock full of guttural low vocals, thick distorted rhythms that have a good level of tasteful groove going on, generally midpaced chord progressions with some slower breakdowns and blasting speeds, etc. At times a nice high-pitched sneer accompanies the low vocals, but for the most part it's indecipherable growls galore. In many ways this definitely sounds like something that would be at home alongside the Razorback Records roster, but the tempos are on the slower side by comparison. I think that's my only minor complaint here: The tempos are too consistently "slow". They do break off some fucking demolishing riffs in that vein, but if they spiced up the tempos with a greater balance of speed, the songs would benefit. The recording is really cool. The drums are crisp but dense and well placed, there's a shitload of throbbing low-end, the guitars are heavy as fuck but have a lot of texture to 'em, and the vocals don't get distracting at all. Everything is mixed very well. The layout's pretty cool. No lyrics are included, but everything looks nice and consistent, and there are abstract yet eerily nasty medical photos of some sort curiously cropped throughout the booklet along with blood splatters and what have you. Simple but effective. This is a strong disc. I wouldn't call it original, and many of the songs can sound similar to one another, but they've got an incredible recording for what they're doing, and they're good at it. If you're into this style, I'd absolutely check this out. If they can retain this powerful a recording in the future, they could really hit the mark. They're damn sure on the right track, but it gets old since most of it sounds the same. (6/10)
