Burzum "Daudi Baldrs" CD
[Dead Ringer]
Ugh. If ever there was an album that need not be reissued, this is it. The first "all synths, all the time" album from the controversial Burzum, "Daudi Baldrs" is like one hugely cheesy synth intro that never fucking ends. Controversy aside, I think Burzum's early records are excellent - benchmarks of the classic black metal aesthetic across the board. But this record sucks on so, so many levels that I cannot put into words the degree of absolute sucking that this record's suckness achieves through sheer, unrepentant sucking. The songs are long, repetitive, and boring; the synth tones totally blow and sound very juvenile, thus destroying what atmosphere some of the tracks might have possessed were live instruments or more professional synths employed; and I can just envision Varg hunched over in the corner using the "hunt-and-peck" method of typing on a piddly little keyboard... all the while thinking, "Oooh, what a dark and atmospheric album this shall be, yes... yes... (strokes goatee)". I've never seen the original layout for this disc, but I know the cover art here is the same, and I assume everything else is as well. They fucked up the front cover and wrote the band name as "Burzu" though, which is sort of funny. All of the paintings are sort of goofy, some aren't bad, but others are silly, and all of the text inside that coincides with the song titles is in Norwegian, so who knows what's up there? The last pages of the booklet are in French and German for some reason, and the latter page seems to describe the Swastika as a traditional symbol and that junk for which Varg is infamously known for blabbering about. Whatever. If you like silly orchestrated crap that sounds shockingly unprofessional, or you enjoy wearing leotards and hopping around in the forest reenacting Norse myths and need a goofy soundtrack to back your goofy hobby, then this record has got your name written all over it. On the other hand, if you prefer good music, steer as clear from this horseshit as possible. If anyone other than Varg Vikernes was responsible for this music there's no way in hell it would have ever seen a professional release, least of all one that ever made its way into the extreme music community. Did I mention that this sucks? (1/10)
