World Burns to Death/Sick Terror "Split" 7"
[Terrötten]
World Burns to Death begins and throws down two of their most interesting tracks to date. The vocals are a bit more scathing, the music is a little bit more melodic and twisted (check out the fucking crazy solo in "...And the Cities Shall Be Your Tombs"), etc. I wouldn't call this their strongest work, but it's nice to see that the band is trying new things rather than stagnating with a specific formula. The recording is fine by me. There's a little bit of a treble bite, and I'd like to hear more bass in the core, but it's alright. I like the clarity of the vocals a lot here. The lyrics here deal mainly with war and are possibly even more negative than some of the band's prior work, and I'd definitely say more concise and simplistic: "When war is the common condition, greater destinies win greater dooms. Cemeteries will be your cathedrals, and the cities shall be your tombs." Up next is Sick Terror with four tracks of their blistering crossover thrash hardcore, plus a cover of Seein' Red's "Waste". "43 Segundos" opens up with a lot of noisiness and really strange experimental sounds and textures that I can't make that much sense of, but the other songs tone down those aspects a little bit. The recording has some noisiness in the mix, but it works out alright. A lot of it's due to some feedback and the noisy textures, which I really do think disrupt their style a bit, but at least it's something out of the ordinary! The 7" is pressed on opaque greenish/blue vinyl and comes in a nice full color sleeve with a full color insert as well. Of course World Burns to Death only uses black and white artwork, but Sick Terror makes use of the full color and everything looks fine by me. It seems to me that Terrötten is another Brazilian label with a strong sense of how to release a good split 7", so I hope that continues... (7/10)
