Sick Terror "Aborto Legal" 7"
[Terrötten]
Here's more killer hardcore/punk from Brazil with straight yelling vocals and a little bit of a crossover thrash feel, mainly due to some faster picking and vocal patterns that are more suggestive of some of the mid-80's US/UK bands of that nature. This is great stuff, too. I love the constant energy of the songwriting, and even though there's not a lot of variety, they never let up, so it stays interesting and powerful straight through. A few tracks like "Faça Vocę Mesmo" and "Minha Música Politicamente Correta" have some obvious old school hardcore breaks (in the late-80's style), but most of the material is a bit faster than that. They close with a cover of No for an Answer's "You Laugh", as well. The production is fine by me. The mix is pretty even, it's rough around the edges but you can hear all of the instruments, etc. There's room for improvement, but they're in a good spot already. The 7" is pressed on clear pink vinyl and comes in a simple sleeve printed in full color with a few small band photos and illustrations, plus lyrics in both Portuguese and English. I really like the lyrics a lot, because they have a distinct meaning, but they're written in a really straightforward, honest manner, which is refreshing. The topics attack some standard issues such as the police and consumerism, and then other songs take on issues such as overly critical "revolutionary" punks who miss the big picture, and even bands (I assume in Brazil and other non-American countries) that are trying to communicate messages of protest to the poor without even singing in their native languages. Very cool. All in all this is a really good 7", worth looking into. (7/10)
