Intifada "s/t" CS
[self-released]

Blistering death/grind with a bleak sort of socio-political message from São Paulo, Brazil. There are a ton of tempo changes from slow and pounding to blazing speeds, of course blending low growls and vicious snarls. "Quartos da Morte" is slightly slower with some strong dissonance and winding rhythms, while "Lascivia, Procriação, Controle" is generally faster and based more around blast beats, which gets a bit stale until it slows down and gets a little heavier - even introducing a quieter passage with some strange clean guitars and layered vocals. "Premiado Com Uma Existência Inútil" is another that blends amazing speeds with some intense slow rhythms that have more dissonance, but I feel that this track is the strongest herein due to the force of its structure and atmosphere. They close with an unexpected cover of "Hellnation" by the Dead Kennedys, but they definitely work it over to fit more within their style. Sadly the recording is pretty terrible, so it's incredibly hard to hear what's going on. You can make out the basic structures, but it's so overly thick and muddy that everything really gets lumped together and loses a large portion of its detail and character, especially during the faster areas, where snare drum becomes the dominant element. The cassette comes in a standard case with a xeroxed insert that has minimal artwork and lyrics in Portuguese. A second insert includes English translations, which is cool because these lyrics are very different from the norm. The topics deal with overthrowing religion to be your own god, overpopulation and forced birth rate control, and masses of people who follow popular opinion rather than thinking for themselves. Cool stuff. The recording is definitely problematic enough to cause a significant setback here, but I like the lyrics and the music demonstrates itself as strong enough draw interest. I'd like to hear more from them with a clearer sound... (6/10)
