Nothing - Carried By a Red Thread

Nothing "Carried By a Red Thread" 3
[Misanthrope]

It's been awhile since I've heard new material from Nothing, and this EP is quite different from most of the project's previous work that I've encountered. Opener "Desperaux" is a rather schizophrenic, beginning with sinister low drones and some hard panned samples sped up in one channel and some twisted instrumentation of some sort in the other. Lots of painful distortion juts in now and then, which really shreds your ears to bits - only to be contrasted by the orchestral synths that swell forth out of nowhere midway through the track to bring it to a close. "Roscuro" is much longer, nearly 10 minutes, consisting of lots of harsh noise fluttering all over the place. Rough distortion, piercing blips and feedback, twisted vocal manipulations, a few stuttered cutup sounding moments in the arrangement, and so on. Just about midway through some pounding rhythms start in, which is a little surprising once the foreground drops out, but it's a nice change of pace. The sound quality is nice. "Roscuro" contains live material and has a rawer edge to it, but "Desperaux" is loud as fuck and has a lot of really bright highs, so everything sounds fine in my book. The disc comes in a slim jewel case with a color insert with an image of thread (tinted a reddish color) and minimal text regarding the release. Simple and tasteful. This is an interesting and unpredictable release. I don't think it's Nothing's best work, but I like the curious and ever-changing approach. (6/10)
