Melk the G6-49 "s/t" CD
[Joyful Noise]

This entire CD from this bass/drums duo consists of one-take recordings with no overdubs, and the entire record was completed in seven hours total. It's not the most engaging listen in the world, but there are a few different approaches at work. At times things are reduced to straight bass drones and rumbles that are almost inaudible, whereas in other instances the bass will be distorted and lock in with drums for a nice rhythmic groove or almost noisy exchange. Then there are other moments, in some ways the most effective, where the bass sways to and fro in a sort of semi feedback state while the drums take care of the more structured elements. Some of the melodic bass playing in "Philistine Camp" with delay actually starts to sound like a guitar for short spurts, while "Apollyon" and "Burst Into Song You Mountains" have some reversed samples that change things up even more. The packaging is somewhat unusual here. The back of the traycard acts as the front cover, with no text and an image of chipping paint and hollowed electrical sockets, then there's no booklet, and the other side of the traycard lists the song titles and minimal recording information. It says their music has been "created through and inspired by Christ", but I don't know what that's about since nothing else about the music or the packaging is suggestive of that whole angle (aside from song titles like "Whoever Knows God"). Whatever. "Experimental rock" for Christ? I don't know. Whatever it is, it's not bad. It could be better. Don't get me wrong, even at a mere 30 minutes some of this stuff is really boring. But at their best the band is definitely in their own little uncommon niche. This isn't for everyone, but fans of bands like 5ive and the like with a taste for the more experimental avenues should be able to appreciate this on some level. The calmer and more creative pieces like "Eight Number of New Beginnings" are definitely very nice. (6/10)
