The Kill - The Soundtrack to Your Violence

The Kill "The Soundtrack to Your Violence" CD
[No Escape]

Two bands called The Kill in one month? Go figure. Here's some raging grindcore from Australia consisting of drums, guitar, and a dual vocal attack - all at the hands of two band members. The writing style is pretty damn cool because they combine your typically blasting speeds with tons of classic grindcore breakdowns and a few really sick dissonant chord phrasings that sound rather out of the ordinary for the style. The vocals are generally raging screams with a few higher/lower ventures and a little bit of doubling at times. Most of the songs are less than a minute, and none hit a minute-and-a-half, so they pretty much shred straight through without fucking around. Okay, they fuck around a little bit, I mean, they do have song titles like "Tracksuit Pants Are Thrash", but musically they're not out to give your ears a good time, per se. I love their riffs though, and the performance seems to be really tight. My only major (sort of) complaint is that the recording's not at all suitable for the ferocious power of the music. Everything is way too thin and leans towards the higher-end of things, so it's abrasive and lacks crunch/density. The drums and vocals sound okay, but the guitars are way too thin, and I do think the absence of bass is a potential problem. With a really heavy guitar tone and thicker drums they could pull this off without bass, but the raw edge hovering over these songs is a little too abrasive to let their full force show through. The layout is all in shades of red and black, and it's pretty minimal, with a few quick band photos and the lyrics over a straight black background. That's about it. The lyrics are sarcastic and attack emo (in the brilliantly titled "Fuck Emo"), fashion, etc. and then many of the other songs glorify violence to no end. "This One Hurts" even takes its lyrics from Guns n' Roses' "My Michelle"!? I like this, but it needs work to really rip my head off. I don't mind the relentless speeds, my only wish would be for a thicker and slightly more polished recoding that would keep some dirtiness in there without going to far over the top. (6/10)
