Goat "England's Satanic Mills - A Requiem for the Industrial Revolution" CD
[Snip-Snip]
I'll be damned... a Goat release that features 24 rather short tracks!? And none of them have the word "goat" in their titles!? Unheard of! Of course, this is still totally raw and in your face harsh noise, make no mistake about that... but it's definitely cool to see the release taking on a different concept and a different manner of delivery. Loops, crunchy distortion, stuttered chaotic textures, densely reverberated walls of sound, feedback... pretty much any kind of distortion you can think of, it's in here somewhere. "Circuitry of Idols" is a bit quieter and more minimal, not to mention brief (right under a minute); "Infidels of the Industrial Throne" is thicker and more aggressive - using a lot of fucked up panning that really stands out and destroys your ears; "Mournful Sanctuary" tackles a similarly ear damaging approach to panning and distortion, tending to lean more towards rhythmic loops; and so on. The dry, raw sound isn't too lo-fi, so I definitely feel that it works, and it can possess a bite... but I think brighter highs and thicker lows could add more definition, which would help. That's no big deal, though. The CD-R comes in a slim jewel case with a xeroxed cover that has a blurry image of an industrial landscape on it, with the tracklist and such on the back. That's it. So, while the presentation still leaves something to be desired, I think this approach as far as the actual noise is concerned is a bit better than average for Goat. Not because it' any great stretch, it's not exactly diverse, but breaking things up into tracks does create a certain sense of variation that long tracks of 15 - 20 minutes can lack. A lot of these songs run together seamlessly, but there's generally enough separation between the segments to hear differences, so that makes a real difference. Not bad at all... (6/10)
