Fate Thirteen - Things Will Never Be the Way They Were Before

Fate Thirteen "Things Will Never Be the Way They Were Before" CD
[United Edge]

Damn, the opening riff on this shit is totally brutal... so I kind of thought this was gonna be ripping, chugga styled metalcore... but really it's just above average melodic Swedish styled metalcore, which is a bit of a letdown because that stuff is way played out, but these guys are better at it than most. There's still too much straightforward tremolo picking, but they know how to bust out the mosh big time, and some of their harmonies are really fast and energetic, closer to what Darkest Hour is doing than anything, and that's not so shabby. The recording could use some work, but they've got a fairly strong foundation in place. The guitar tone is nice and textured, the bass is there, the vocals and drums are really dry... I think I want the drums to be thicker and more rounded out so they wouldn't stand out so much, and the vocals could fall back in with the guitars as well. But it's alright for the most part... the drums do really get to me after awhile, though. One or two songs sound slightly muddier and off balance, but that's life I guess. Visually this one looks pretty slick. I like the photography on the cover a lot, something about it really looks different than most records, the clear CD face with some printing over the top is another nice touch. All of the lyrics are generally straightforward and bitter, with one track unrepentantly claiming "the straight edge" and the others taking a more emotional angle. Not bad. With a slightly fuller and more consistent recording (tone down the snare, please) and songs that focus more on intense melodies and chord progressions rather than simple tremolo picking runs this band could be really fucking good. Aspects of "Start the Evolution" and especially "Relentless" are really awesome... so hopefully they'll progress in that direction. (6/10)
