Cordell Klier "Blessed be the Authoritarians" CD
[Snip-Snip]
Seven untitled tracks of thick, minimal dark ambient electronics. Like his release on Ad Noiseam, this material is rather quiet and consistent, and there are a lot of glitchy electronic textures involved, but despite the lacking visual appearance of the release, I actually find these tracks to be more enjoyable. There's a lot more of an atmosphere involved, and the glitches seem to make more sense and be used more tactfully in regards to the compositions. And this material isn't as quiet either. It's calm, and the output level is perhaps lower than normal, but not to where you need to strain to hear what's going on. Everything is dense and smooth, flowing along in a very hypnotic manner, with lots of rumbling low end and oppressive drones. On occasion things get a bit bleaker and focus solely on minimal hums and bass tones, or eerie vibrating layers might seep in, but nothing strays too far from the general delivery at all. There are a few moments towards the end of the disc that I'm not into, but other than that it's set. Another thing that I like in this case, since it's been handled so well, is that all of the songs run together, basically forming one 47-minute track... sometimes the track divisions separate actual differences (minor differences) in sound, but in other cases you can't really tell when it shifts from one phase to another. The CD-R comes in a slim jewel case with a small one-sided xerox insert wrapped in a light blue cover that folds around the front sides to reveal the album title. The back of the wraparound has contact information and such on it, and that's about it. It's not awful, but it does look a little boring and rough around the edges to fit the style of the music... not to mention represent how strong the tracks really are. With a more professional presentation this would be a great release. I like this a lot more than the full-length on Ad Noiseam for sure. Good work... (6/10)
