Brave Saint Saturn "The Light of Things Hoped For..." CD
[Tooth & Nail]

Yeah, uhhh... I guess because these guys use little bits and pieces of electronics and some oh so trendy new wave keyboards they've taken to calling their brand of typical indie rock with more of that third-rate Weezer sound "astro rock", and they also sort of play with that kind of imagery in the lyrics. Well, guess what? This ain't that good. And you know why? Because of the stupid "astro" elements. I don't know what the fuck these dudes are thinking, but the keyboards and shit absolutely ruin their music. It serves no purpose whatsoever to use funky sounding 80's pop keyboards with this shit, nor does it makes sense to throw in samples and little electronic textures, or the occasional programmed beat... it's just dumb. They only use those elements sporadically as well, so they make the songs feel cluttered and lacking direction. Were they to toss all that shit and just be a regular old band with guitars, drums, bass, and vocals, they'd be alright. Granted some of these songs fucking sound sort of like Nickleback or radio rock shit like that, but worse if you can possibly imagine such a thing. The production's fine. The acoustic guitars sound awesome, the drums are crisp and fairly natural, I like the range of tones in the vocal recording, you can hear some bass in there, and the mix is pretty good. None of that matters because the songs aren't really that listenable, though. I'm really thrown off by the layout, which has a lot of comic book styled illustrations in it - dealing with outer space and such, and a lot of that imagery carries over into the lyrics as well, which blend into personal expressions and some painfully overt references to Jesus and shit like that, but as one who's not into that stuff I'm completely turned away by such content. Three strikes. They're out. This is not at all a good CD, and I can't understand why this band would get signed. People who are all about Jesus do tend to listen to a lot of incredibly awful music, though. Go figure. No one needs 50+ minutes of this garbage. Avoid at all costs. (1/10)
Running time - 51:58, Tracks: 16
[Notable tracks: several songs have strong elements, but none of them are good]
