Some Kind of Hate "Undisputed" CD
[Bridge Nine]
Only on Bridge Nine could a 12-song "full-length" run less than 16 minutes! I really liked this band's last 7" and this full-length continues in a similar vein. There's definitely more of a punk rock influence in this material though, both in certain aspects of the music as well as the bitter and sarcastic tinge of the gruff vocals (just check out "Watch Them Fall"). And once more the songs are short as fuck, with only a couple running more than a minute-and-a-half! Most of it's all rooted in straight ahead old school hardcore, occasionally venturing into faster or slower territory or messing with melody/dissonance. "The Big Letdown", for instance, is slower and a bit more creative musically, definitely standing out from the pack. I really fucking dig the vocals with this band, though. They make a huge difference and really convey the attitude of the lyrics perfectly. Good stuff. The recording's not bad, though the snare drum is definitely too snappy, so it kind of jumps out at you a hell of a lot. Other than that they could use more brightness to their sound, as far as overall clarity or whatnot, but I like the vocals, and the distortion definitely has a good texture to it. I fucking love the layout on this thing. It's nothing overly special, but the photos are great and totally represent the band's attitude. The front cover shot is priceless. The lyrics rule as well, there's just no bullshit: "Believe me, this isn't what I signed up for, Fuck these people they mean nothing to me, They take something I love and cheapen it, Is this just some passing trend, So you can sit back and cash in, This is my one chance to say what's on my mind, Get it off my fucking chest, Don't care about crossing lines, So all of you... fuck you." Hopefully this band will stick around for awhile instead of breaking up like so many promising hardcore bands seem to do early on these days. I don't feel that these guys have reached their full potential yet, so when they do, watch the fuck out. (7/10)
