Some Girls - All My Friends Are Going Death

Some Girls "All My Friends Are Going Death" CD
[Deathwish]

This is the first time I've ever heard this band, and I know nothing about them really. There's no lineup credited in the booklet, but I guess some of the members are or have also been involved in Give Up the Ghost, Unbroken, Over My Dead Body, The Locust, and Swing Kids, but it doesn't sound like any of that stuff. It's pretty in your face hardcore with more of an abrasive side. Think really short songs that tend to not pass the one-minute mark, lots of raging shouts/screams with some wild vocal patterns, some noisier textures and almost grinding tempos at times, moderately paced breakdowns, straightforward chord progressions, etc. "The Rains" is slightly more aggressive with a heavier edge, "Up to Our Hips" jumps quickly from blazing speeds to slower and more tangible chord progressions, and just before the last track they cover "No Fun" by The Stooges - which definitely stands out, not only because it's a little slower and longer than the other songs, but because it brings out more of that rocking sort of early punk sound that is evident in some of these other tracks, but never to the obvious degree represented by the cover song. There are a few unlisted songs tucked away at track #69, but I don't know what they are, maybe songs from one of the band's 7"s or something? Who knows? The recording's alright. Actually, it's pretty good, but the vocals are too dominant in my opinion. There's a little distortion on the yelling, and that adds more volume, so they jump out over the instruments a little. It's all somewhat raw, but the instruments are mixed pretty closely with one another and everything works out because the details of the textures have room to breathe. I really like the artwork here, everything is done in white and maroon, and the collaged high contrast photos blend together very nicely and create some bizarre images. The lyrics can be mildly interesting simply because they're not totally direct: "So we are on a poor, but potentially lovely ship, And I want to cannonball the railing, life vest and all, Hey ho let's go, Okay it's colder than I thought, One request - leave me the fuck alone." Not bad. It's short as fuck, but if it were too long it would damn sure be overkill. I like it, it's not all that memorable or individual, but it has its moments. (6/10)
Running time - 28:15, Tracks: 15
