Foutredieu!!!/Concrete Violin - Split

Foutredieu!!!/Concrete Violin "Split" CS
[Dada Drumming]

Foutredieu!!! begins this collaboration with his most superbly titled song yet, "Hermeneutical Propension on the Theoretical Subversive Properties of Militant Neutralism (Back to the Spirit of Luddic Jazz)", inspired chiefly by Boris Vian and Herbie Hancock (Say what?) and beginning with thick low-end rumblings and some twisted high-end cutting tones sweeping across a layer of distortion. Things increase in volume and level of chaos as some jazzy samples filter into the distance, but those moments are few and far between. A couple of instances of brilliantly eerie feedback surface, but a dense core of harsh yet mildly atmospheric noise drives the piece. I think there are a few vocal passages as well, but they're not very blatant nor pronounced, so if that's what they are they're really just additional texture it seems. Concrete Violin's also insanely titled "When He Gets Done Felating Dick Cheney, Toby Keith Can Lick My Rectum (The Lucid American)" takes side B, created using source material from Foutredieu!!! to build an immensely atmospheric ambient piece that flirts with just a few little distorted textures. After the initial opening jazz sample the similarities between the two tracks cease, as the remainder revolves around sinister high-end and midrange hums panning across a crispy distorted filter. Shockingly some thicker textures and absolutely blazing distorted vocals kick in almost out of nowhere, taking the track in a far more death industrial/power electronics vein. Acerbic feedback begins to take over towards the latter half of the composition, along with these obscured vocals. I can't help but wish that the track title was less "tongue-in-cheek" (I couldn't resist) since there's nothing humorous about the mood of this piece, but what can you do? The tape comes wrapped in a page from a book with a two-sided black and white insert inside of a color sleeve that's housed in a transparent silver anti-static bag. The artwork is sort of abstract and overly Photoshop-altered, while the inserts are driven by text, so it could look a lot better, but the addition of the bag is a cool touch. Despite a few issues that I have with underlying aspects of this release, the material speaks for itself and wins out in the end. A very strong collaboration, and the best track I've heard to date from Concrete Violin. (7/10)
Running time - 30:00 (approximately), Tracks: 2
[Notable tracks: both are quite good, though I must confess that Concrete Violin shines]
